LABELS: Tronic / Systematic / Suara / 100% Pure

Christian Smith is one of the world’s leading exponents of techno, both as a DJ and producer he is always bold and innovative, leading rather than following. With his output in recent years it is hard to imagine a list of prolific producers without his name towards the top.

He has consistently dominated charts and DJs playlists with a steady flow of releases on high profile labels like Plus 8/Minus, Cocoon, Bedrock, Mobilee, and his own Tronic imprint. Christian Smith has operated at the top of his game for over a decade now, with his trademark blend of high impact tech-house and groovy techno. His latest album „Stranger Than Paradise“ (Tronic 2014), the follow-up to his critically acclaimed “Omakase”(Tronic, 2013), has secured worldwide praise with a superb dancefloor orientated selection of tracks that explore and showcase his various styles within the techno genre: musical, peak-time and minimal.

Christian’s Tronic label is also one of the top 3 selling techno labels in the world according to Beatport and Christian has also recently celebrated the landmark of Tronic’s 100th release. Another success story has been the launch of Tronic Radio, a weekly show now syndicated to over 100 stations around the globe. Christian’s touring schedule is busier than ever, including regular Tronic parties in London, Miami, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Amsterdam, New York, Madrid. With yearly guest spots at Richie Hawtin’s “Enter” parties @ Space, Ibiza, and many Festivals around the world it is certain that Christian will maintain his relevance and position at the very pinnacle of electronic music.

Hello Christian! How Are You? What do you have scheduled for today?
Hello. I’m well thanks. After doing my emails this morning, I will go to the beach. Its 28c and sunny so its a perfect beach day! 🙂

You are Label owner ( Tronic ) , Producer, Radio host, a proud daddy and every weekend touring. How do you handle this massive weekly schedule?
Lots of work, and a good team! Also, if you like that you do it’s not that difficult. Just sometimes with my heavy touring schedule i am not home a lot. Thats the only disadvantage with this job.

What is your plan for 2015 and is there anything special coming soon?
Right now I have a Beatport #1 with Tronic, so i can’t complain. I constantly produce music. I also have a new single out this week called „Believe“ which is a collaboration with good friend Wehbba. And in June  a massive remake of my classic „Total Departure“ which originally came out on Drumcode will be released on Tronic. I also have a bunch of Tronic events coming up. Busy busy, but i can’t complain.

How would you describe your sound?
House and Techno.

What was your funniest or craziest experience while touring?
When I recently arrived in Tokyo at the airport some people thought I was John Travolta and many people started screaming and wanting autographs. I was tired and jet lagged so this was a rather strange experience for me.

What keeps you motivated to make further, as DJ / Producer?
I just love what I do. I love making music, dj’ing, running a label, and having my radio show.

Your mix is a live recorded set from your last gig @ WOMB, Tokyo! As you are touring a lot, please tell us something about your experience around the globe. What is your favourite city or country and why?
My favourite country and city used to be Japan. Japan is still amazing, but now my favourite country to play in is Argentina. The crowds there are very passionate and when I play normally 3-4000 people show up at my gigs. And they appreciate longer sets, so I usually do 5-7 hour sets there.

What were your TOP 5 gigs so far?
My tour in in Argenina in January. All gigs were incredible. Every year i ask myself how can it get any better. But somehow the energy is more powerful every time. Really amazing.

What are your top 5 tracks that are really working the dance floor in your sets at the Moment?

1. Christian Smith & John Selway – Total Departure (Christian Smith Remake) – Tronic
2.  Julian Juweil – Shaka (Christian Smith Remix) – Form
3. Misstress Barbara – Need That – Tronic
4. Dubspeeka – Ksk3 – Truesoul
5. Harry Romero – I’m Gonna Get You – Tronic

Thank you for your time and this interesting interview!
