LABELS: KNEE DEEP IN SOUND / STEREO PRODUCTIONS / BEDROCK / LEENA MUSIC
Montel has truly earned his place in the vanguard of the House & Techno scene. His productions have featured on esteemed labels such as Bedrock Records, Knee Deep In Sound, Stereo Productions, Leena Music, Lost Records, Madtech, Avotre and Roush. These releases have been championed by top flight DJs such as John Digweed, Anja Schneider, Richy Ahmed, Hot Since 82 and many more!
More recently though, montel’s Techno output has seen him step up to another level. One of his best selling tracks ‚At Night‘ (which reached #18 on Beatport’s Techno Top 100 in Jan 16) has been a main stay in the club sets of John Digweed, Carl Cox and many other of the Techno elite this year! Following this came his ‚Within‘ track, which was swiftly picked up by Anja Schneider and her Mobilee Records off shoot ‚Leena Music‘. Later in 2016 came his Bedrock Records follow up EP. Tracks ‘He’s Not There’ & ‘Semper’ charted top 20 & top 50 respectively in the Beatport Tech House & Techno Top 100’s. Plus his remix of Citizenn’s ‘Slide’ track on Abode Records reached #11 in the Tech House Top 10 and was heavily supported by Sasha & Digweed, Hot Since 82, Richy Ahmed, Anja Schneider and many more!
Consistently featuring in the BBC Radio 1 playlists of Pete Tong, B.Traits, Annie Mac, Danny Howard and Skream have further allowed montel’s profile to flourish, not just with DJ’s and music heads a like, but the greater audience of musical lovers across the globe.
Following on from his original productions and mastering the art of the House & Techno game, his re-editing skills produced arguably one of his biggest tracks to date. His reworking of Danny Tenaglia’s seminal House classic ‚Music Is The Answer‘ has become a ubiquitous club anthem throughout 2016 so far and the ‚go to record‘ for many top jocks!
montel’s DJing ability is one of his strongest assets however.. With a career that spans nearly 15 years! The programming of his sets is a talent he learnt by following masters in the game such as Francois K, MAW, Danny Tenaglia, Doc Martin, John Digweed, Ian Pooley, Tom Middleton et al. In current times, many DJs stick to playing a certain sub-genre of House or Techno and only playing new tracks. montel’s sets see him effortlessly transitioning from House, to Disco, to Techno. Ranging in tempos and moods. Focusing more on the true spirit of the music and less on current DJ trends, he’s a DJ prepared to take chances and not play it safe. This has earned him the admiration of many promoters and his DJ piers.
As we move further into 2017, montel’s profile continues to grow and grow, with productions on top flight labels and a busy touring schedule. montel is an in demand DJ, Producer and Remixer with a true passion for music!
Hello mate! How Are You? What do you have scheduled for today?
Great! I’m really busy at the moment setting up my new record label for a club night I work with in my home town of Belfast called Misfit.
Please tell us a bit about your latest releases!
So far this year I’ve had a big EP out on Bedrock records. It’s a little more in the techno side of my sound. The release has done really well and got some huge support from the likes of Adam Beyer, Monika Kruse and Dubfire. Then I also had a single release out on Kaluki Musik. It was part of a 4 track EP alongside Darius Syrossian, Solardo and Mihalis Safras.
Most recently was a new EP for Chicago based Incorrect Music. It came out last week and has got really good support from BBC Radio and also in the clubs with Richy Ahmed, Groove Armada and Sidney Charles!
Which release was the one who gave you the most attention so far?
There’s been a few releases that have done really well for me! My first release on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep In Sound called ‚I Can’t Remember‘ really crossed over the House & Techno divide. So many DJ’s and radio station were playing that! Then my ‚Jumpin‘ track on Lost Records did really well in the House & Tech House scene! Then all my output on Bedrock does really well in the Techno scene. Bedrock has such a huge global fan base, so it really gets my sound out there, plus it’s an honour to work alongside John Digweed!
Tell us a bit about your upcoming releases! Is there anything special planned?
I’ve got lots coming out soon.. Next up in June, I have an EP on New York based Kinetika, home to guys like Joeski, Matt Sassari and Denis Cruz! Then in July I’m back on Stereo Productions. It’s a big label that I’ve worked with lots. This will be my 4th release with them! And at the end of the summer I have a big 3 track EP with Viva Music. Im really happy to be working with Steve Lawler, as he’s been supporting my music alot recently!
As you are touring a lot, please tell us something about your experience. What is your favourite city or country and why?
I love playing in the Netherlands. They have a great scene there. They take clubbing and music very seriously. The production at all the events is really good and the people are always up for a party!
What were your TOP gigs so far?
Playing the Bedrock party at Ministry of Sound, London recently was a bit of a dream come true. The club is amazing, the sound system is one of the best on the planet and it was an honour playing alongside the legend that is John Digweed!
You always get some special gigs at ADE each year too and it was great playing the Strafwerk party last Oct with many great names like Hot Since 82, Eats Everything, Cristoph, Phil Weeks and lots of others!
Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to play in Dubai many times! The clubs are amazing and the thing that makes the place so special is the international crowd that goes out to the parties. My favourite place I played there was 360. It’s completly open air and you get the opportunity to play long sets to very open minded clubbers. Always amazing!
Another gig I have to mention is Misfit in Belfast where I do a monthly residency. The club is amazing, with a kick ass sound system, but it’s the young and up for it crowd that really make the place special. Their so into the music and sometimes there’s no better place to play than a home gig!!
