LABELS: Lapsus / DFTD / Katermukke / Clap Your Hands / Suara
Although Nils Thabo Gelfort is still a rookie in the house and techno scene, he has already released on prestigious labels like Suara, DFTD, Katermukke. His latest EPs have been supported by Carl Craig, DJ T, DJ Sneak, Dubspeeka, Joris Voorn, Riva Starr, Santé, Sidney Charles, Shadow Child and many more.
As a child of 90s golden era, his passion for hip hop can be perceived throughout his productions. Therefore, it’s no wonder that his DJ sets rather follow a suspense curve, driven by rhythmic percussion and pulsating basslines, than being trapped in the niche of a genre.
Besides DJing and producing, Thabo runs various event series in Berlin and never grows tired of promoting innovative concepts and ideas. One of the latest outcomes is Random Noise where he – in collaboration with Be-At.Tv – will bring sublime labels to Berlin’s underground club IPSE.
More recently, Thabo took the chance to present himself to a more international crowd, including gigs in Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and is looking forward to continuing this path through music.
My Favourite Freaks Interview
Hello Nils! How Are You? What do you have scheduled for today?
Pretty good, sunny day in Berlin! I am actually trying to book a headliner for our boat party for the Clap Your Hands Off Sonar party.
You are producer and touring almost every weekend. How do you manage this massive schedule?
Well it´s all still manageable, I am still far away from making my living with playing and producing only. The tougher part is really to be able to do your “other” work and find time to produce and gig. Since I’ m lately having the chance to play more and more outside of Berlin, it’s also getting harder and harder to find enough time to see my friends or my girlfriend. So it’s basically just like for many other people: you just have to keep an eye on creating a proper work-life-balance.
Please tell us a bit about your latest releases!
My latest release was a one track EP on Clap Your Hands. It came with two amazing remixes, one by Sacha Robotti, who made it a booty shaking house version and another incredible trippy version by From Karaoke To Stardom
Which release was the one who gave you the most attention so far?
I think both collabos I did with Mat.Joe for the Suara compilations got picked up very well. I am always happy if a track works.
As you are touring a lot, please tell us something about your experience around the globe. What is your favourite city or country and why?
Tough one. Every country and city has to offer so many different things. I think my perfect city would be a warmer Berlin at the seaside, with a nice beach.
What was your funniest or craziest experience while touring?
A very recent one was in Kolkata, India, when the driver who was supposed to pick me up didn’t show up and and I took a cab to the hotel. The taxi driver had actually no clue where my accommodation was located. But even though he only spoke very broken English, he realized how exhausted I was and he tried to cheer me up and make conversation. As he asked me where I am from and I answered Germany he turned around with thumps up and said: Ohhhh, Hitler, good. I guess, cultural boundaries can be one really fun aspect.
What were your TOP 5 gigs so far?
That’s another tough one. I think the places where you haven´t played before are always the most exciting. There is so much to discover and therefore you are paying more attention to your surrounding and the people around you. In Berlin I would say Ipse and Watergate, but it really depends on so many details like the crowd, the lighting, or even the mood your in on that night.
What are your top 5 tracks that are really working the dance floor in your sets at the moment?
