LABELS: HOT CREATIONS / MOBILEE / POKER FLAT
Raised on soul, funk & disco and lost days in dusty record shops, music enthused ‘Tom Flynn’ was endeared to a House music journey from a young age. A DJ, a producer and engineer, Tom has released music with the worlds finest labels, Hot Creations, Dirtybird and of course his home at Circus Recordings.
Tom’s music constantly appears in the record boxes of Guy Gerber, Jamie Jones, Carl Cox, Dennis Ferrer, Richie Hawtin and Yousef and he has been awarded both ‘best breakthrough producer’ ‘Essential New Tune’ accolades from Pete Tong.
Djing highly esteemed clubs such as Sankeys (ibiza), Verboten (New York), SpyBar (Chicago) Circus (Liverpool & London), and a weekly radio show that gathers thousands of global listeners, Tom is on a journey that’s in its infancy, producing House and Techno with a mission.
Hello Tom! How Are You? What do you have scheduled for today?
Hey, i’m great thanks. I’m actually working on some music in the studio right now, but i’m taking a break to speak to you sir. Then i’m going to go record shopping if i can make it out in time later.
Which release was the one who gave you the most attention so far?
I would probably say my Bianca track on SIZE. Once Pete Tong got behind that it took off for me.
How would you describe your sound?
I don’t think i have a sound, i just go in the studio, push some buttons and see what happens. I don’t follow any trends or what people think is ‚hot right now‘. I just be myself and have fun. I get influenced by a lot of other music i listen to, not so much house, but other stuff, like i love people like autograff, kygo, four tet, floating points etc. I always look for the good in people’s music, a lot of the time it’s not for me, but i will always find something i like in there. I don’t like negative people who talk bad on other genres or peoples work, i don’t get down like that.
Please tell us a bit about your latest and upcoming releases!
Well i have a remix for Danse Club records that’s just come out, there’s another EP for Hot Creations, i’m working with Jamie Jones on a track together, also an EP on sasha’s LNOE label and i’m also looking seriously into my own label now. I want to do a label that puts out different records, i’ve got the music myself, but also other artists that i hear that are unique, i’m going to do that. It won’t be another tech house label, there’s already 6 million of them, it’ll be for people like me who are just a bit weird and left of centre. I’m talking about records that aren’t peak time, some are, some aren’t, but just good music that i can put on whilst i do my piano homework.
As you are touring a lot, please tell us something about your experience around the globe. What is your favourite city or country and why?
Haha i get asked this all the time, i usually answer whichever city i’m in lolz. No seriously, i think New York is my favourite city in the world, you can be anything you want in the world there, and do anything you want. I should also say, Chicago holds dear to my heart, every time i go there i just fall in love some more with it, New york is my wife and Chicago is my mistress.
What was your funniest or craziest experience while touring?
My girlfriend thought this was funny, i didn’t, we got on a plane heading to Seattle from New york, i fell asleep before we took off, like i usually do, and i slept for a good few hours, then all of a sudden i woke up and in a bit of a daze i said to her ‚wow that was a great sleep‘ and she said ‚The planes broke down, we haven’t even taken off yet, we’ve been sat on the runway for 3 hours‘.
What were your TOP 5 gigs so far?
I really couldn’t say to be honest, it sounds crazy but i don’t remember them like that, everyone is different. I enjoy playing in America a lot, that’s my favourite place to play. I really feel like they lose their inhibitions more there.
